May: Queer TV Theory
Even though we’re known for our attention to film theory, we know that queer representation matters across all media. So for one month out of the year, we turn our critical eyes to the small screen for what we like to call Queer Television Theory 101!
This month, our professors will take a specific episode of TV from their youth that made a significant impression upon their queer development. Maybe it was the big, fat lesbian kiss that happened on Roseanne! Maybe it was the episode of Will & Grace where Will and Jack woke up in bed together! Or maybe it’s, well, any single episode of Steven Universe!
Television wasn’t always as accepting of queer characters as it is today, so the times we did see ourselves on screen stood out more than usual. Together, we’re going to spend the evening exploring some of those “very special episodes” that held meaning for our professors. We promise it’ll be a night of nostalgia, celebration, and laughs.
Doors open at 7:00pm, show starts at 7:30pm. Always free and welcoming to everyone! And now ASL interpreted!
We’ll be joined by our friends from Reverie Books. And stick around afterwards for Mochi Mochi, Austin’s premiere anime-themed drag show!

April: Alter Egos
It’s time for an exciting night of intrigue and excitement at QFT 101! We’re looking at those movies featuring memorable performances of characters living their best double lives! That’s right, we’re celebrating ALTER EGOS!
Think Mrs. Doubtfire, Spider-Man, or even She’s the Man. These masters of disguise always have such good intentions for their clever deceptions, but their secret identities always get uncovered (and at the most dramatic times!) and everyone eventually learns the impotance of living authentically.
This is pretty familiar territory in the queer community, as many of us basically spent the first portion of our lives in the closet, pretending to be less-interesting versions of ourselves. Getting to live your authentic life is just the frickin’ best, isn’t it? And now that we’re living our authentically best lives, we get to watch all these silly straight people in the movies learn these lessons over and over again!
So join us for a night of wig-snatching and receipts getting read! It’s going to be a blast!

March: Award Winners
Here at QFT, we love watching the Oscars - the Gay Super Bowl! - for all the drama and the hype and the presenters and the outfits. (Mostly the outfits.) And while we all know that awards aren’t what determine the worth of a film, awards shows sure are fun, and they give us something to talk about for a few days anyways.
This month, we’re inviting all of our professors to pick from the movies that have landed in the winners’ circle, either as a Best Picture, a Best Screenplay, or maybe for Best Director, an acting award, or costumes or even special effects. It doesn’t matter what the movie won for, we’re gonna talk about them.
LGBTQIA2S+ representation has been creeping more and more into cinema these days — and not always for the best reasons. So we’ll be looking at the history of these award-winning movies and how they either contributed or detracted from the greater queer conversation. And trust us, there’s LOTS to unpack.
And yes, of course, we’ll talk about what everyone was wearing on the red carpet…

February: Rom-Coms
Here at Queer Film Theory, we LOVE love! So we also love movies about love, especially the queer varieties! So for February’s QFT 101, our professors will be exploring the magic of cinematic romance through the films that made them swoon, maybe taught them some lessons, but always left them wanting more.
There are so many different definitions and ways of feeling and expressing love, and we’ve all experienced the concept differently. So it’s going to be a hoot to see how our professors interpret the assignment using one of our favorite movie genres and unpacking its tropes through a queer lens.
So find someone or someones you love and bring them along for our silly queer exploration of the (other) L-word. Unlike Valentine’s Day, we’re free AND we really can guarantee a good time!

January: Stanley Tucci
You loved him as the gruff but tender gay mentor to Anne Hathaway in The Devil Wears Prada. He was the queer-friendly dad to Emma Stone in Easy A and one half of the perfect queer couple in Supernova.
He might be straight in real life, but in Movieland, Stanley Tucci belongs to the queer community. We claim him as one of our own. So this month, we’re celebrating this QFT icon in our own special way.
Inspired by the long-form QFT format of our sister show in San Francsico, we’re hosting a full-on love fest of The Tooch based on his seminal role of Sean — his OTHER pivotal gruff but tender gay mentor with a love for fashion — that he played in 2010’s queerest movie, Burlesque.
Everyone is invited to celebrate this ally and icon. It’s going to be a queer old time!
